Typically we prefer kids to be 16 years or older, but have made exceptions based on a parent’s assurance that the child was mature and ready. Remember, discussing and preparing for self-defense is a serious subject.
*Also, parents must attend the course with their kids and in some cases must be their training partner when there are no other teenagers at the course.
Here’s an in-depth reply, please read carefully:
1) The CFD course was designed for the CrossFit Level 1 (L1) Trainer who wants offer a practical, contemporary and relevant personal defense solution for their clientele without deviating from CrossFit methodology.
If you’re coaching at a box, this is an invaluable course, the format and drills are unique, inventive and creative. Yes, there are shared movements & principles. The SPEAR/PDR & CFD share the physiological foundation of the startle-flinch which is a universal protective movement and this research is it’s drills appear in every course we teach. But CFD is an entirely different format, design, language and structure than the PDR course.
2) TECHNICAL COMPARISON: The PDR program is an advanced educational curriculum designed for professional self-defense instructors. It is a robust and all inclusive personal defense method based on SPEAR System research, and includes our BMF scenario-based training and an entire supporting curriculum for the serious trainer. (like weapons defense, multiple assailant, scenario-based training (BMF), kids courses and more.)
3) AREA OF OPERATION: CrossFit Defense is designed exclusively for CrossFit Level 1’s and the goal is to take CrossFit coaches and give them our fundamental concepts and a prescription of drills to teach in a Box setting.
The PDR program is for the professional self-defense trainer. It augments their current program and course syllabus. A PDR coach can branch out and offer PDR training to local schools, hospitals, real-estate offices, business’s to name a few examples.
CFD is specifically designed around the Box and the CrossFit athlete, it is a “community specific” product that gives the L1 trainer a focused approach, a lesson plan, drills and skills to help make CrossFit athletes at their box safer.
If you’re interested in mental & physical skills to help bridge the gap between MMA and street defense, then absolutely you should attend. There’s always something to learn about awareness, mind-set, fear management and close quarter defense.
If you’re coming to look for some hook or angle to apply to MMA and you aren’t attending for personal safety and skills development, you may leave unfulfilled. This is NOT a sport class.
Having said that, if you are a legitimate CrossFt athlete, you’ll love the course.
*Please read the testimonials for a deeper appreciation of what happens during the course.
The CFD program is based on sound kinematics and makes use of many CrossFit movements that mimic combative movement. This makes the program simple and effective without getting sidetracked with rituals commonly found in martial arts.
IMPORTANT: This course is not MMA or sport fighting. There is NO fighting. The course is a series of personal-defense skills and scenarios. All drills and scenarios follow strict safety protocols and the pace is set by the participant. The course is based on Tony Blauer’s S.P.E.A.R. System which is based on the unparalleled speed of the startle-flinch response. The flinch-response is the human body’s strongest bio-mechanical position, the arms create a barrier between a defender and an opponent. This position, known as Outside 90, serves as a bridge for the next tactic. Attendees also learn the psychology and fear management skills that underpin the S.P.E.A.R. System.
So ‘no’ it is not just another martial art with a cool name. 🙂
There are no ‘sport techniques’ in this course. Therefore there is no sparring. The CrossFit Defense course is a true personal-defense course. The focus is on improving awareness, mind-set and practical close quarter skills. As far as physical activity, there are several partner drills and a high-intensity D-WOD day that test the participants understanding of the movements and reactions as a defender and as a role-player attacker.
A: The course is excellent for anyone involved in public safety sector as it addresses sudden and close quarter confrontations. It’s a great refresher or introduction to our close quarter drills & skils
